| The town of Juana Diaz first celebrate the Three Kings Day Feast around 1884. Today it is the most ornate and recognized celebration of the Epiphany on the island. The day begins with a procession of musicians, angels, shepherds and gigantic puppets in the shape of the kings. Immediately after the Three Kings arrive riding atop fine Arabian horses opening their way toward the town's plaza where they perform the ritual of the visit to the Infant Jesus. The drama is divided in several acts, the meeting with the shepherds, the mass and finally the moment where the kings paying homage to the Infant Jesus prostrate themselves before Him. Without a doubt the most emotional moment of the day is when the kings taking the child in their arms raise him and show him to the public exclaiming "Long live the Infant Jesus." The people rejoice while they respond echoing the kings' call. Once the protocol is completed the kings receive the children and accept their gratitude and petitions. What makes this celebration unique is the attention to detail in the presentation, From the beards of the kings (which are real), to the creation of the costumes, to the use of a live baby in the role of the Infant Jesus, it is truly difficult not to go back in time and feel that we are really witnessing this historic moment. |

El pueblo de Juana Diaz comenzó a celebrar la fiesta del día de Reyes alrededor de 1884. Hoy dia es probablemente la celebración más vistosa y reconocida sobre el tema en toda la isla. El día comienza con una procesión de músicos, ángeles, pastores (hombres niños y bebés) y marionetas gigantescas alusivas a la fiesta. Acto seguido hacen su llegada los tres Reyes Magos de Oriente montados en finos corceles árabes abriéndose paso hasta la plaza del pueblo y allí comienza la observación de la visita al Niño Jesús. El drama está dividido en varios pasos a saber; el encuentro con los pastores, la sagrada misa y finalmente el momento donde los reyes en homenaje al Santo Niño se postran ante El. Sin duda el momento más emotivo del día es cuando los reyes tomando el niño en sus brazos lo alzan mostrándolo a todos los presentes y exclaman "Que Viva El Niño Jesús". El pueblo se desborda de alegría mientras repite una y otra vez la misma frase. Ya terminado el protocolo los reyes reciben informalmente a los niños y aceptan sus gratitudes y pedidos. Lo que hace que esta fiesta sea única es lo detallado de la presentación. Desde las barbas de los Reyes(son reales), la elaboración de sus vestidos, hasta el uso de un bebé de carne y hueso en el papel del Niño Jesús hace difícil no remontarse en el tiempo y sentir que realmente se está presenciando este momento histórico. |
